Reporting to the Executive Director, the Policy Director will lead AMERIPEN’s legislative and regulatory advocacy efforts, shaping packaging and packaging-related policies at both the state and federal levels. This high-impact role provides the opportunity to develop and implement strategic initiatives, lead engagement efforts with policymakers and stakeholders, and continue AMERIPEN’s position as the authoritative voice for packaging policy in the U.S.

As the leading voice for packaging policy in the United States, AMERIPEN works with legislators, regulators, and stakeholders to develop science-based, data-driven solutions that enhance packaging’s role in product protection and circularity.

Experience & Leadership
We seek a seasoned professional with 10+ years of experience in government relations, public policy, or related roles, preferably within the packaging industry. This role offers a leadership opportunity to drive real change in packaging policy at the state and national levels while working alongside industry leaders and key decision-makers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership in packaging policy advocacy.
  • Guide the development and updating of AMERIPEN’s official positions on critical policy issues, synthesizing and leveraging viewpoints from AMERIPEN members.
  • Oversee, direct and work closely with consultants and lobbyists supporting AMERIPEN’s initiatives.
  • Monitor packaging-related legislative and regulatory initiatives, identifying potential impacts on AMERIPEN members.
  • Draft and deliver written and oral comments on proposed legislation/regulations impacting the packaging industry, from a material-inclusive, wholistic industry perspective.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key legislative and regulatory officials and industry stakeholders that have jurisdiction over packaging-related issues.
  • Assist with coordinating grassroots advocacy efforts among AMERIPEN members, including mobilizing members to testify before legislators and participate in public hearings.
  • Provide regular legislative and regulatory updates to AMERIPEN members via written reports and virtual meetings.
  • Maintain policy-related resources for AMERIPEN members, provide input on policy-related communications, and develop messaging and materials for member meetings with policymakers.
  • Act as a trusted resource, responding to inquiries about legislation, regulations, and AMERIPEN’s stance on key issues.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, public affairs or a related field (Master’s or Juris Doctorate preferred but not required).
  • 10+ years of relevant experience, with a strong track record in policy advocacy and government relations (experience within a trade association preferred but not required).
  • Self-starter mentality, with the ability to take quick action on policy as it is developed.
  • Ability to lead and work as part of a team with internal and external partners.
  • In-depth understanding of political processes and advocacy techniques, particularly at the state level.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling policy arguments and tailor communications to specific audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills, with a demonstrated ability to work independently and strategically as part of a small team, with a proactive leadership approach.
  • Skilled at collaboration, with the ability to expertly balance diverse opinions, and develop consensus with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of policy issues related to packaging and/or packaging materials (strongly valued but not required).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Estimated travel required: 30%.
